Over 40 Faculty From Across 5 Schools Gathered for the 2023 Neurodevelopment Research Retreat

Over 40 faculty from the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Education & Human Development, Data Science, and the College of Arts & Sciences gathered at UVA's Zehmer Hall on October 12th for the 2023 Neurodevelopment Research Retreat.

The event program featured virtual guest speaker Dr. Vittorio Gallo, Senior Vice President & Chief Scientific Officer at Seattle Children's Research Institute. UVA faculty shared about their areas of expertise and research interests. The group also discussed how to collectively build and sustain interdisciplinary, translational research across Grounds specifically focused on neurodevelopment research. Findings from the first year of the Baby Brain Initiative's (BaBI) NICU research registry were presented and discussed.

The annual retreat, hosted by Drs. Sarah Kucenas and Howard Goodkin, is one piece of the Grand Challenges Research Investment in Brain and Neuroscience, and Neurodevelopment has been identified as a priority area within the Grand Challenges. The group will build on the momentum of the retreat by establishing monthly meetings in 2024 to discuss opportunities for collaboration and to enhance the overall research environment on Grounds. Please contact the Brain Institute to learn more about ongoing and planned neurodevelopment research initiatives and to participate in future, related meetings.
