2023 Epilepsy Interest Group Retreat Attended by Over 60 Faculty, Trainees, and Staff

Over 60 faculty, postdocs, graduate students, undergraduate students, and staff gathered at the Forum Hotel on November 9th, 2023, for the 2023 Epilepsy Interest Group Research Retreat.

The retreat featured research presentations from 19 faculty and trainees, and also included a trainee session dedicated to discussing research techniques and common challenges. Seven departments from 2 UVA Schools were represented, including both clinical and research faculty & trainees, as well as a group from the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. The annual event was organized by Dr. Manoj Patel, Dr. Mark Beenhakker, Dr. Nathan Fountain and Raquel Miralles in collaboration with Dr. Jaideep Kapur and the UVA Brain Institute.

The Epilepsy Interest Group was started in 2019 and meets weekly to discuss research findings, breakthroughs, challenges, and opportunities. Since 2019, the group has grown significantly in size and in the scope of epilepsy and related disorders research. The group will continue weekly meetings in 2024 with plans for another retreat, as well as other programmatic developments such as the submission of complex extramural funding proposals.

Please contact the Brain Institute to learn more about ongoing and upcoming epilepsy research initiatives and to participate in future meetings.
