The mission of the Center for Healthy Brain Development is to serve individuals affected by intellectual and developmental disabilities by integrating translational research at the University of Virginia to form a cohesive, organized center for the commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.


  1. ENGAGE a diverse community of infants at high risk for for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities prospectively and longitudinally to improve our understanding, prevention, and treatment of IDD.
  2. ESTABLISH a innovative, powerful, and efficient data science model for comprehensive -omics IDD research, such that our work is sharable, strong in infrastructure, and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable).
  3. PROMOTE novel interdisciplinary translational research focused on the field of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities by providing coordination and clinical consultation support, supporting centralized participant recruitment, enrollment, and characterization, and also providing infrastructure for community-engaged research.
